    identification: Medium size but can range to large; round to round-conic, can be irregular shaped. The skin is green maturing to pale yellow, often with a brownish-red blush on the sun-exposed face. Fairly large, dark-brown lenticels are widely scattered over the surface. The stem is short, woody and stout, set in a shallow cavity surrounded by a patch of russet that sometimes extends onto the shoulder. The calyx is partly open, medium size and set in a very flat/shallow, almost nonexistent basin.
            
    characteristics: The flesh is white, soft. Sweet, marginally tannic and slightly tart. Browns heavily on exposure to air.
                        
    origins: Originated in the early 1700s in Exeter, Devon. It was grown extensively during the 1800s but then declined.  More recently, it become a popular cider apple again and is grown widely on most continents.
            
    cultivation: Vigorous, semi-spreading and precocious. A large tree on its own roots. Spur bearer with a pronounced tendency to produce fruit every other year. When it does produce, the crops are heavy.
            
                                    
    cold storage: Does not store well but can be sweated for two or three weeks.
            
    vulnerabilities: Susceptible to scab and powdery mildew.
            
    harvest: Late in the fifth period and sometimes into the early part of the sixth.
            
    notes: The 
 LeBret  is frequently mislabelled as Sweet Coppin.
 
            
            
    juice character: A Devon-style cider apple. Intensely sweet; depending on the soil and season, it can have some bitter tannins. Regarded as vintage quality.
