LeBret

LeBret
type: Culinary, Cider, Dessert
synonyms: Le Bret
summary: This apple from the Normandy region of France is more often used for making cider than intended since a labelling mix-up during the 1900s resulted in it becoming flagged as Sweet Coppin and Sweet Alford . It does make a passable Normandy style cider, but it achieves vintage quality only with rare perfect conditions.
identification: Yellow base colour, flushed red on the sun-exposed face.
origins: UK
cultivation: Weakly vigorous.
cold storage: Does not keep well. Needs to be used soon after harvest.
harvest: Very late. At the end of the fifth period.
notes: This is often sold as Sweet Alford as a result of a mislabelling error and the two names have become synonymous for Sweet Alford. However, the two do not actually resemble each other in that the Sweet Alford is a yellow apple with just a hint of a blush on the sun-exposed face and prominent red lenticels. Both Le Bret and Sweet Alford can have vintage attributes, given the right growing conditions. Though sweet like the Alford, it does not match up in body and is not a vintage variety
pollination group: D
pollination peak: 15
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
harvest period: 5
