summary: This old variety likely originated as a chance seedling in the eastern United State during the early 1800s and has received mixed reviews. Those who favour it consider it one of the best juicy and sweet summer eating apples, others describe it a moderate kitchen apple and good for making dried apple rings.
identification: Medium tending to large, conic to oblong fruit. The base colour is pale yellow, over which is a pattern of red, sometimes deep red stripes. Marked with light-coloured lenticels. The stem is long and set in a deep cavity. The calyx is small to medium and usually closed, set in a shallow, almost flat basin.
characteristics: The flesh is pale yellow sometimes with pale pink stains, coarse-grained and juicy. Spicy and aromatic.
origins: A popular American apple variety which likely originated in eastern U.S.A—possibly New Jersey—in the 1800s, although Lee Calhoun cites that it was listed by a Delaware nursery in 1791. It was called as Summer Queening by Bernard McMahon in his 1806 edition of the American Gardener's Calendar. William Coxe describes it eloquently in his 1817 edition of "A View of the Cultivation of Fruit Trees and the Management of Orchards and Cider" saying "The Summer Queen is an apple of the finest quality, and its appearance is uncommonly beautiful."
The Encyclopedia of Arkansas states that "Wellington (Writ) Waller created the August Beauty, Summer Queen, and Summer Champion varieties."
cultivation: Vigorous, spreading tree.. Grows to a large size with bearing branches are somewhat limber and droop noticeably from the weight of its annual crops.
cold storage: Does not keep well.
harvest: The apple is ready for harvest starting in the middle of the third period.
notes: Some sources list the Large Summer Queen as a distinct cultivar. It is typically larger than the Summer Queen and has cream coloured flesh, but is the same in all other aspects. It could possibly have developed as an overlooked mutation.
