summary: This heritage British apple is sometimes eaten out of hand, but usually used for cooking. Makes a tart, bright yellow sauce.
identification: Medium size tending to large and even very large, round to flat-rounded, often with faintly angular sides. The skin base colour is pale greenish-yellow washed with red and marked with red flecks and faint stripes. The calyx is small and partly open, set in a somewhat deep and wide basin surrounded by a five knobbed crown. The stem is medium long and medium thick, set in a deep and wide, russet-lined cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white, fine-grained and tender. Very juicy and tart.
origins: Raised from seeds bought at a local market in 1858 by a Mr. W. Bull who was a farmer in Billericay, Essex (U.K.). Initially, it was known as Essex Queen but introduced in 1880 by Saltmarsh of Chelmsford, Essex (U.K.) as The Claimant. It received a First Class Certificate from Britain's Royal Horticultural Society in 1880. There is no record of its parentage.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading tree. Bears fruit on spurs. Produces good crops.
cold storage: Keeps up to three months in cold storage.
vulnerabilities: Highly resistant to scab.
