summary: Better known as Salish, this was one of three apples selected from of a cross of Splendour and Gala in 1981, as were Nicola and Aurora Golden Gala. It is a crunchy, sweet and juicy fresh-eating apple intended for supermarket sales.
identification: Medium size, round-oblong. The base colour is yellow, washed bright red over 70 to 90 per cent of the surface and marked with small to medium size lenticels. Some light russetting on the face. No bloom but tends to have a waxy feel as it nears harvest. The calyx is medium to large and partly to fully open, set in a deep and wide basin. The stem is thin to medium thick and long, set in a moderately deep and wide cavity. Smooth, glossy skin.
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, firm, crisp, and crunchy. Juicy, sweet and slightly tart. The flesh tends to brown quickly when exposed to air.
origins: This is another one of three seedlings from a cross of
Splendour and
Irazu created by W.D. Lane and R.A. MacDonald in 1981 as part of the breeding programme at the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre in Summerland, British Columbia (Canada). Released for testing as breeder reference number 8S-62-61 and first fruited in 1992. Listed as SPA493 in 1997 and officially named during the October 2012 University of British Columbia Apple Festival.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, spreading. Spur bearer and needs annual post-bloom thinning. Usually produces fruit on an annual basis. Responds well to high-density planting. Some mishapen fruit does occur.
cold storage: Keeps up to four months in cold storage.
vulnerabilities: Susceptible to scab, fireblight.
harvest: During the first half of the fifth period and two harvests are generally required. No pre-harvest drop.
