summary: Developed to tolerate the cold winter conditions prevalent in Eastern Canada, this apple is intended for both eating out of hand and for baking.
identification: Medium to large size. Round tending to conic. The base colour is pale yellow, over which are large patches of bright cherry red and darker red with fine striping. Patches of russet skin often develop around the stem cavity and on the cheek. The knobbed stem is somewhat slender and long. set in a narrow cavity. The calyx is medium size and partly open, set in a shallow and narrow basin, which is lightly crowned. Develops a slight bloom as it ripens.
characteristics: The flesh is creamy white, sometimes with a pink stain under the skin. Crunchy and firm. Juicy and slightly sweet-tart.
origins: Grown in 1993 by Roland Joannin of La Pomme de Demain in St-Joseph-du-Lac, Quebec (Canada) from an open-pollinated seedling of
NJ 75 . The pollen parent of this apple is speculated to have been
Golden Russet, American . Selected for more intense trial from among 1,200 seedlings in 2011 and subsequently released to commercial growers in 2015 under the name Passionata. The development and promotion of the variety was carried out under the La Pomme de demain program dedicated to the development of new apple varieties best suited to growing conditions in eastern Canada.
