summary: A classic pink-fleshed apple developed in the early 1940s by California fruit breeder Albert Etter.
identification: Small to medium size, round tending to conic. The skin is a pale green, almost creamy, with a faint pink blush. Crimson-pink flowers.
characteristics: The flesh varies from off-white to soft pink colour. Crisp, fine-grained and sweet-tart.
uses: Intended as a fresh-eating fruit, but it also makes a sweet/tangy, pink apple sauce.
origins: One of 30 open-pollinated seedlings from Surprise (Etter) (Etter Surprise) parentage developed by California breeder, Albert Etter in Briceland (later known as Ettersburg), California, (U.S.A.). Introduced in 1944 by partner George Roeding of the California Nursery Company.
