type: Dessert
identification: Large and round tending to round-flattened with pronounced ribbing on the larger apples. The base colour is pale, greenish-yellow, washed dark red on the sun-exposed face and marked with pale striping on the partially exposed surface, especially around the stem cavity. The calyx is medium size and partly open, set in a medium deep and wide basin. The stem is short and medium thick, set in a deep, narrow and russeted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white with some red stains next to the skin. Fine-grained, crisp and tender. Juicy, sweet and lightly flavoured.
origins: Developed in 1924 by crossing Gascoyne’s Scarlet with Scarlet Nonpareil by apple breeder Frederick Wastie of Eynsham in Oxfordshire, England.
