type: Cider, Dessert, Pie
synonyms: Tradenamed "Cordera" in honour of Robert Lamb, the apple breeder at New York State's Cornell University from 1948 to 1988. Cordera is the Spanish term for "lamb."
summary: Bred for its genetic resistance to apple scab as well as its appearance and performance, this brisk and juicy apple is an alternative to the popular Honeycrisp.
identification: The fruit is large and conic, sometimes rounded, in shape and has a yellowish-green base colour. Over this is a reddish-grey blush that covers more than half the surface. Marked with small, round lenticels. The stem is moderately long and moderately stout, set in wide and deep russeted basin. The calyx is closed and erect. A light bloom develops on the skin as the apple matures. Four to five pips are found in the core.
characteristics: The flesh is white, firm, crisp, and juicy. Mild sweet-tart flavour.
origins: Developed in 1994 by Dr. Susan Brown and research specialist Kevin Maloney at Cornell University's apple breeding program in Geneva, New York U.S.A. by crossing Honeycrisp ( MN 1711 ) with pollen from NY65707-19, a varietal developed from Liberty ( NY 55140-19 ). From these, 165 seedlings that met the criteria of scab resistance, precocity and fruit quality were selected for further planting. In 1999, a single seedling - referred to as NY94410-56 and later shortened to NY56 - was chosen to provide the foundation for this new varietal.
cultivation: The tree is moderately vigorous on its own roots. Needs to be winter pruned and trimmed before fruit set to maintain size and annual fruit production.
cold storage: Keeps up to 2.5 months in cold storage, above freezing.
vulnerabilities: Bred for its resistance to apple scab through exposure to the Vf gene that provides genetic protection against to Venturia inaequalis. Also resistant to apple rust.
harvest: Ready for harvest in first half of midseason (Harvest period 4).
