Northern Crow Egg

Northern Crow Egg
type: Dessert
synonyms: Crow Egg, Northern Crow Egg and Northern Crow’s Egg (incorrect). This variety is often lumped together with the Black Gilliflower and called Black Annie, Raven Egg and Sheep’s Nose , though these apples are more conic and are distinctly different in flavour.
summary: Though touted as an American heritage apple, this outstanding summer eating variety may have originated in Britain and carried to North America and Australia by colonists. Wherever it originated, it well deserves a spot in most any orchard.
identification: Medium size, round tending to round-flattened. The skin is glossy with a base colour that is pale yellow to orange with a deep red blush and striping. Small, light-coloured lenticels are most prominent on the shaded face, more widely scattered on the sun-exposed faces. Light russetting in the stem cavity. The stem is long and slender, extending well beyond its wide and somewhat deep cavity. The calyx is set in a shallow basin.
characteristics: The flesh is white. Firm and fine-grained. Juicy and sweet-tart. Excellent fresh-eating apple.
uses: A highly regarded fresh eating apple.
origins: First described by William Kenrick in his "The North American Orchardist" (published 1833) after receiving samples from Abijah Fisher of Dedham, Massachusetts (U.S.A.). This could be the Crow's Egg apple that originated in Britain in the early 1600s and was listed by John Parkinson in his Theatrum Botanicum (published, 1640). The apples may well have been carried by settlers to North America as well as Australia.
cultivation: Distinctly biennial. Moderately productive. Fruit grows in clusters.
vulnerabilities: Susceptible to fire blight.
harvest: In the middle of the fourth period. Fruit hangs well to maturity.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
