identification: Medium size and round conic to conic shape with ribbing around the calyx basin. The skin is glossy with a greenish yellow base colour over which are dull red streaks and flushes.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, fine-grained, firm and crisp. Juicy, sweet and lightly tart.
uses: Used mostly for cooking and baking, but it can also be eaten fresh.
origins: New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, Geneva, New York (U.S.A.). Ulysses Hedrick, then horticulturalist at the institute and later its director, cross-pollinated Jonathan with Rome Beauty in 1910. The new variety underwent 39 years of development before it was finally released in 1949. Raised in 1910 by Richard Wellington at New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, Geneva, New York, USA. Introduced in 1947
cultivation: Hardy, vigorous, upright spreading tree. Starts to bear fruit quite young and produces good crops annually. Fruit holds well on the tree at maturity.
cold storage: Keeps up to three months in cold storage.
vulnerabilities: Highly susceptible to scab and mildew and moderately susceptible to blight.
harvest: Ready for harvest early in the FOURTH period.
notes: Can be confused with Jonathan because of similarities in shape and colour.
