identification: The fruit is medium tending to small. Base colour is golden yellow over which is a red wash with darker red striping. Russet cracks develop around the calyx.
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured tending to light yellow. Firm and very juicy. Extremely sweet. Aromatic with a cane sugar/molasses and lychee flavours.
uses: Dessert apple, also good for making cider.
origins: This apple was originated as a chance seedling in the 1920s at the University of Minnesota and became the mainstay of its breeding programme to produce cold-hardy varieties. At the request of many orchardists, the university released the cultivar with apples going into production in 2010.
cultivation: Low to medium vigor, spreading tree. Bears fruit on spurs. Good annual crops.
cold storage: Keeps up to four months in storage, but russet cracks tend to become moldy and afflicted apples should be culled from storage.
