identification: Medium size, round tending to round conic. Smooth. Flushed or sometimes striped red over a greenish base colour. The skin is tough and develops a greasy feel at maturity.
characteristics: The flesh is pale yellowish and coarse-grained. Very juicy, sweet-sharp and aromatic some years, mild in other years. Bruises easily.
uses: Often eaten fresh, but also makes a good cooking apple.
origins: Originated as an open pollinated seedling of
Cox’s Orange Pippin raised by Professor Schmidt in the 1930s at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut für Züchtungsforschung in Müncheberg (Germany). Released in 1962.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, spreading tree. Prefers fertile soil. Precocious, producing flowers at two years after planting. Tends to produce best every other year. Has a tendency to produce flavourless apples some years.
cold storage: Keeps about two months in storage.
