identification: Medium tending to large size apple. Round conic, often lopsided. The skin colour is yellow with orange and red flushes typical of the
Cox’s Orange Pippin .
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, coarse-grained, dense and crunchy. Juicy and sweet, slightly tart and highly aromatic.
uses: Eating fresh, pies, sauce, cider.
origins: Developed in 1966 at the East Malling Reseach Station in Kent (U.K.) from a cross-pollination of
Cox’s Orange Pippin with
Starking Double Red Delicious in an effort to produce an apple that was easier to grow, but with the exceptional flavour of the Cox. Introduced in 1981.
cultivation: Vigorous, upright, spreading tree. Spur bearer that crops heavily on an annual basis. Has wide crotch angles which require support as the apples ripen.
vulnerabilities: Scab and mildew resistant. Prone to bitter pit.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the first half of the fifth period.
