identification: Medium sometimes large size. The skin base colour is green over which are large splashes of red covering up to three quarters of the surface.
characteristics: The flesh is white, soft. Juicy, sweet with hints of loganberry.
uses: A fresh eating apple.
origins: Developed by G.W. Schneider at the New Jersey Agriculture Experiment Station in New Brunswick, New Jersey (U.S.A.) crossing NJ 8 ( Petrel x Early McIntosh ) with pollen from NJ 110037 ( Melba , Williams and Starr ). Released in 1962.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous tree. Partial tip bearer.
cold storage: Keeps less than a month in storage.
vulnerabilities: Highly susceptible to scab and mildew, somewhat to blight and rust.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the middle of the second period.and the entire crop tends to ripen over a relatively short two-week window. Prone to pre-harvest fruit drop.
notes: In warmer growing conditions, fruit may mature before colouring up.
