synonyms: Early Apple, Early Crofton, Early Crofton Small, Small Early Crofton. Sometimes also called Crofton, but this is confusing because there are several apples known by that name.
identification: Small to medium, round and slightly flattened. Smooth, thick skin is yellow or yellowish green striped with dark red. Sun exposed side shows dull red or brown red flushes. Flecks of russetting. Faint tortoiseshell pattern. The stem is short and stout, set in a deep cavity.
characteristics: Flesh is cream-coloured. Fine-grained, crisp and juicy. Sweet-sharp and aromatic.
uses: Best eaten fresh. Also makes excellent apple juice.
origins: The cultivar likely originated at Longford House in County Sligo (Ireland). It was documented in 1812 in the course of a County Antrim survey and was subsequently presented to the Royal Horticultural Society in London in 1819 by Kilkenny nursery owner John Robertson whereupon it enjoyed many decades of popularity in Victorian and Edwardian England. According to some sources, it is a probably an Irish Seedling x Yellow Transparent cross.
