identification: Medium to large in size. Round, somewhat conic and often shows five distinct crowns. Background skin colour is greenish yellow to golden yellow over which are flushes of bright orange red and wide, dark stripes. Large russeted lenticels. The stem is stout and long, set in a moderately shallow uneven cavity which is often surrounded by green skin. The calyx is medium size and open, set in a wide and shallow basin. Thin skinned. Resembles a Cox’s Orange Pippin , but bigger and brighter in colour.
characteristics: Distinctly cream-coloured flesh, coarse-grained, juicy and noticeably aromatic, typically with pineapple flavours. Excellent sugar/acid balance. Produces yellowish-orange juice. Does not brown when exposed to air.
uses: Fresh eating, apple sauce, apple butter, pies, hard cider.
origins: Believed to be an open pollinated seedling of Cox’s Orange Pippin . Raised in 1918 in a backyard garden in Eutin, Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) by a teacher named Vahldik.
cultivation: Vigorous, spreading spur-bearer that produces good cropping annually. as well as frost damage. The flowers are very susceptible to late frosts.
vulnerabilities: Scab resistant, but susceptible to mildew, blight and canker.
