synonyms: An American fresh-eating apple from the mid-1900s resembling the Jonathon in flavour. Deep red skin colour with white flesh.
identification: Medium size, round to round flattened. The skin base colour is yellowish-white, over which is a dark red wash covering two thirds of the surface or more; lightly striped over a greenish yellow skin on the shaded face. Marked with large tan lenticels. The stem is short and rises just up to the crown of a deep and narrow cavity. The calyx is small and closed, set in a narrow and deep cavity. Develops a thick, waxy bloom at maturity.
characteristics: The flesh is white and crisp. Juicy and sweet to mildly sweet-sharp with hints of strawberry. The flavour resembles that of ((Jonathan)
origins: A cross of Macoun with pollen from Jonathan developed in the 1950s by Dr. Freeman. S. Howlett at the Ohio Agriculture Experiment Station in Wooster, Ohio (U.S.A.). Introduced in 1964.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright. Prone to grow quite tall and needs aggressive pruning to maintain useful size.
