identification: Medium size, round to round conic, irregularly ribbed, often atypical shape. The skin is smooth, base colour green maturing to greenish yellow over which is a deep reddish brown wash marked with deep red striping. Small, tan-coloured lenticels are scattered across the surface. The stem is short somewhat stout and set in a deep and wide cavity. The calyx is large and partly open, often closed, set in a narrow and deep basin.
characteristics: The flesh is pale greenish, firm and coarse-grained. Somewhat dry, sweet, mildly spicy and somewhat acidic.
origins: Thought to have originated in the Kanton Thurgau of northeastern Switzerland in the 1820s.
cultivation: Vigorous, upright spreading tree. Dense branching.
