identification: Large, round and ribbed. The skin is smooth and waxy, and greenish yellow maturing to a rich yellow. Sometimes blushed dull brownish on the sun exposed face. Look for spots of russet, especially toward the stem cavity. The stem, stubby and short, rarely reaching beyond the shoulder of the deep and wide stem cavity which is usually russetted.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish white, fine-grained, tender and soft. Juicy and sweet-sharp.
origins: Hawley originated around 1750 on the farm of Matthew Hawley of New Canaan, New York (U.S.A.). It was raised from pip originally brought from Milford, Connecticut.
cultivation: Slow to start fruiting. Produces average crops on an annual basis.
cold storage: Keeps two months in storage.
vulnerabilities: Susceptible to scab when grown in moist or humid areas.
harvest: Ready for harvest starting early in the THIRD period.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
