synonyms: Mesa Red, Jack Red, Jack's Red, Ozark, Payton, Reagan, Red Ben Davis, Black Ben Davis. The latter is considered by many to be a separate apple variety, in all likelyhood a bud mutation of Ben Davis.
summary: A highly-coloured mutation of
Ben Davis extensively grown in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia (U.S.A.) during the 1880s, though the state of Missouri lays claim to the origins of this variety. However, it is identical in all respects to the
Black Ben Davis which was found by Parson Black on his farm in Washington County, Arkansas (U.S.A.) in 1869. Marketed by Storrs & Harrison Nursery of Missouri (U.S.A.) during the late 1800s.
identification: Medium tending to large size and round conic. Light yellow background colour flushed and striped with light red maturing to purple. The stem is long and slender, set in a deep and wide cavity which often has russet radiating out. Feels waxy. Looks very much like a Ben Davis, except that it it more vividly coloured and smaller.
uses: Fresh eating, baking, juice and cider.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
hardiness: 5
