Douce Moën

identification: Small to medium size, long-conic with a ridged crown. The skin base colour is golden yellow washed with red on the sun-exposed face. Russet patches. The stem is short and stout, set in a shallow, narrow cavity which is russeted, often radiating over the shoulders onto the face. The calyx is moderately large and set in an open, somewhat deep basin surrounded with a ridged crown.
origins: Originated in the Clohars-Carnoët region (France) and widely grown by cider and Calvados producers around Cornouaille.
cultivation: Vigorous, upright spreading, dome shaped tree. Bears fruit primarily on spurs, also on tips to some degree. Precocious, but has a tendency to produce fruit every other year.
harvest: In the last half of the fourth period although some years the fruit can ripen as much as a month earlier.
juice character: Makes an excellent Brittany style cider
