synonyms: Sometimes misspelled Colonel Yale. Often called Colonel Yates.
identification: Large, round-flattened with pronounced ribbing. The base colour is greenish-yellow, blushed a lighter shade of brick-red with a broken pattern of darker stripes on the sun-exposed face. The stem is short and slender, set in a deep and narrow cavity. The calyx is small, partly open and set in a medium deep funnel-shaped basin.
characteristics: The flesh is pale green, fine-grained and firm. Sweet.
uses: A cooking apple also eaten fresh.
origins: A cross of Lane’s Prince Albert with pollen from Peasgood’s Nonsuch . Developed by W.H. Divers if Surbiton, Surrey (England) in 1905.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading spur bearer.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the middle part of the fifth period.
