summary: This crisp and sweet-tart eating apple was one of about 50 apple cultivars developed under the PRI (Purdue University, Rutgers University and the University of Illinois) programme using Malus floribunda 821 to develop apple varieties that are genetically resistant to scab. Introduced in 1975.
identification: Large ranging to very large. Conic tending to ovate and ribbed faces. Yellow to golden yellow with a pale red blush on the sun exposed face and abundantly marked with russet lenticels, The calyx is medium size and partly open, set in a deep and narrow, ribbed basin, often surrounded by a distinctly knobbed crown. The stem is very long and slender, set in a deep and narrow, lightly russeted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is yellow, fine-grained, crisp and tender. Juicy, sweet-tart and aromatic. Thin skinned, bruises easily.
uses: A delicious eating apple for those who like tart apples, otherwise a good baking apple.
origins: Developed in 1955 by PRI which is a cooperative breeding program between Purdue, Rutgers and Illinois State Univerities (U.S.A.). Crossing Doud Golden Delicious 2-4-4-4 (a tetraploid) with pollen from PRI 14-152 ( Golden Delicious x F2 26829-2-2). First fruited in 1961 and introduced in 1975.
cultivation: Vigorous, spreading tree. Grows into a moderately large tree on its own roots. Precocious. Average or below average production on an annual basis. Well suited to home gardens and u-picks.
