identification: Medium size tending to large, round-flattened. The base colour is greenish which is washed reddish-purple over which is a dense pattern of darker striping. The stem is short and stout, set in a wide and somewhat shallow cavity. The calyx is small and tightly closed, set in a shallow and wide basin which is surrounded by an irregularly knobbed crown.

origins: The National Fruit Collection considers this to be the same as the Api which is listed as having originated In Brittany (France) during the Middle Ages and is typically a rather small apple. On the other hand, the Bölleöpfel is considered to be a medium to large variety that is recorded as having originated in Switzerland.
