summary: A useful long keeping dessert apple from Britain. Cox's Orange Pippin parentage.
identification: Medium tending to large size, round-conic. The base colour is greenish-yellow, over which is a bright red wash and a pattern of darker striping covering two thirds of the surface. The stem long and slender, set in a deep and narrow cavity is surrounded by a large patch of russet that extends almost onto the shoulder of the fruit. Calyx is small, slightly corrugated and shallow.
characteristics: The flesh is white, crisp and firm. Juicy and tart.
origins: A seedling of
Cox’s Orange Pippin developed at Bedford (U.K.) by A. Norman. The pollen parent is not known. First recorded in 1946.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous.
cold storage: Keeps in storage for about 12 weeks
harvest: Harvest over the course about three weeks during the middle period, but apples are best left to ripen in storage for a couple of weeks.
