identification: Small, round to round-conic. The skin is pale yellow marked with dark red flushes and red stripes. Pale greyish lenticels.
characteristics: The flesh is cream coloured with red stains under the skin. Firm. Juicy, sweet-sharp, aromatic and spicy
uses: A good fresh-eating apple. Makes excellent apple butter. Also used for cider.
origins: Originated with Matthew Yates of Fayette County, Georgia (U.S.A.) around 1844. Long a popular Southern favorite prized for its fine flavor and long keeping qualities
cultivation: Vigorous. Produces heavy crops annually. Trimming is necessary at fruit set to ensure medium size apples. Well suited to mild climates.
