identification: Medium size and round conic, often angular and lopsided. Pale green skin covered with large, bright red flushes. Marked with light russet lenticels. The calyx is small and partly open, set in a very shallow, puckered basin. The stem is slender and medium long set in a shallow and wide cavity. Some russet radiating out from the stem cavity, often onto the shoulder.
characteristics: The white flesh is crisp, firm, juicy and intensely sweet. The characteristic strawberry flavour can be quite pronounced.
uses: An excellent dessert apple. Also makes outstanding cider and juice. Apple flans made with this apple are the very best.
origins: Thought to be an open-pollinated seedling of Devonshire Quarrenden, the Worcester Pearmain was raised during the 1870s by William Hales in the St. John's district of Worcester, England (U.K.). It was named and introduced to the market by St. John's Nursery (operated by Richard Smith) in 1874 and received the Royal Horticultural Society's First Class Certificate in 1875.

cold storage: Keeps up to two months. For best quality, leave the apple on the tree until fully ripe and then eaten as soo possible.

notes: There is also a mutation of Worcester Pearmain which carries the same name. Originated at the Parsons Mead School in Ashtead, Surrey (U.K.). More bright red colouring.
