type: Eating
identification: Medium size, round and somewhat flat. The skin base colour is yellow?green over which are flushes of dull orange and stripes of bright red. The stem is club shaped, medium in length and somewhat stout, set in a deep, rather narrow well.
characteristics: The flesh is creamy colour, dense, crisp and fairly juicy. Fairly sharp in flavour.
uses: Intended as a fresh eating apple.
origins: This apple was found in the 1970s by Dan Neuteboom as a sport of Suntan (CoxÕs Orange Pippin x Court Pendu Plat) in the Braitheworth orchards in High Suffolk, U.K. which had been planted in Suntan. Since it produced fruit that fell ou the rigorously controlled standards of the marketing board f that variety, it could not be sold under the trademark. However, recognizing that the sport tended to produce dependable and better crops, Neuteboom decided to propogate it by grafting and promote it under the Winter Wonder name.
