Walker Pippin

synonyms: Walker Sweet and Walker Favorite are the accepted synonyms for this variety. However, because of its similarities to the Walker Yellow, the Walker Pippin is sometimes referred to as Walker Yellow as well as other synonyms attributed to the latter. The Walker Pippin is a mid-to late summer apple, while the Walker Yellow ripens two months later.
summary: This heritage apple was grown in the southeastern United States through the 1800s but faded away in the early1900s. It was restored in the late 1900s. Very similar and often confused with the Walker Yellow .
identification: Medium size tending to large, round-conic. The base colour is golden yellow over which are a pale reddish striping on the sun-exposed face. The stem is slender and long, set in a narrow and deep cavity. The calyx is moderately small and open, set in a narrow and shallow basin.
characteristics: The flesh is pale cream coloured. Firm and crunchy. Juicy and very tart, often acidic.
origins: Referred to as one of a dozen excellent varieties of apples of "southern origin" in the 1870 issue of "The Southern Cultivator and Industrial Journal" with the statement that "Of fall apples--ripening say from September to the first of December--there are few that will compare with and none that will excel the following of Southern origin." The Walker Pippin was listed as one of a dozen varieties that meets this standard. However,

notes: The Walker Pippin was considered lost until noted apple searcher, the late Tom Brown, successfully located an apple of this description in Yancey County, North Carolina (U.S.A.). He listed it as Walker's Favorite, one of a handful of synonyms used for the Walker Pippin. What sets it apart from the similar Walker Yellow is that it comes ripe about two months earlier.
