type: Dessert
synonyms: Trademarked and marketed as Cosmic Crisp.
summary: A cross of Enterprise and Honeycrisp, this large and sweet, fresh-eating apple was introduced for commercial production in 2017. In addition to its flavour and texture, it has an exceptionally long storage life.
identification: Large, tending to very large, round-conic shape. Slightly ribbed on the faces and crowned around the calyx basin. The base colour is yellow, over which is a dark wine-red wash and marked with abundant white, medium-sized lenticels. Young trees produce irregularly shaped fruit, but as the trees mature, the shape normalizes to round-conic. Develops some greasiness, usually no bloom. The stem is long and moderately stout, set in a deep, wide cavity. The calyx is medium size and set in a deep and wide basin.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish. Firm and crisp. Typical of the Honeycrisp genetics, it is sweet and very juicy with just a touch of tanginess. Does not brown when exposed to air.
origins: Developed by Dr. Bruce Barritt at the Washington State University's Tree Fruit Research Center in Wenatchee, Washington (U.S.A.) in 1997. Honeycrisp crossed with pollen from Enterprise . Selected for further consideration in 2003 and propagated in 2004 for test trial plantings. Made available for commercial orchards in 2017 and the fruit became available to consumers in 2019.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading. Fruit spurs often develop on two-year-old trees.
cold storage: Reported to last up to one year in cold storage
vulnerabilities: Moderately susceptible to powdery mildew and fire blight. The stem cavity is prone to splitting on a small percentage of the harvest.
harvest: Ready for harvest toward the end of the fourth period. Some of the fruit develops on very short stems and these will be pushed off resulting in pre-harvest drop.
