identification: Medium, oblong to oblong conic. The skin colour is yellow, washed red over which are broken, darker red stripes on the sun-exposed face. Marked with light-coloured lenticels. The calyx is medium size and open, set in a shallow and small basin. The stem is somewhat short and slender, set in a shallow and narrow, russetted cavity.
characteristics: Flesh is creamy-yellow, crisp and firm. Sharply acidic. Distinct flavour of pears.
uses: This is a cooking apple which makes wonderfully aromatic sauce and puree and delicious pies.
origins: Raised at the Thomas Rivers Nursery in Sawbridgeworth (U.K.), possibly as a seedling of Mother . There is no record of the pollen parent. The cultivar was initially introduced on the market as Rivers Codlin in 1894, but the name was changed to Thomas Rivers in 1897 in honour of the founder of the Rivers Nursery.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading tree. Bears fruit on spurs. Produces good harvests.
