identification: Medium size, sometimes smaller. Round often irregular in shape. Skin is thick and tough, yellow base over which are stripes and blushes of red covering almost all of the apple. Numerous, light coloured, russeted lenticels. The stem is medium long, and slender, set in a large, deep cavity which is often russeted. The eye is large and partly open or completely closed, set in a medium basin.
characteristics: The flesh is white, fine grained crisp, juicy. Flavourful with a refreshing, mild tartness.
uses: A good eating apple.
origins: Found as a chance seedling on the farm of ??? Terry i Fulton County, Georgia (USA) prior to 1868 when nurseryman James Sneed of Morrow, Georgia, took scionwood from the tree and began propogating it under the name Terry Winter. However, large scale propogation of the variety was undertaken by S.M. Wayman who, in 1884, came across some of Sneed s trees in a local nursery and marketed the variety commercial orchards under the name Terry Winter Pippin. It was first catalogued in 1885 by W.D.Beatie.
