identification: Medium to large. Round to oblong and often somewhat conic. The base colour is cream, over which is a reddish orange blush marked with darker striping that fade to bright red. The calyx is small and partly open, set in a moderately deep and narrow basin. The stem is somewhat short and medium thickness, set in a medium deep and somewhat wide, russetted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white, crisp. Juicy, sweet-sharp, aromatic and very fruity.
origins: Developed at Sweden's Balsgard Fruit Breeding Institute by crossing Gyllenkroks Astrakan with Worcester Pearmain. Introduced in 1973.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous.
cold storage: Does not keep well.
harvest: In the first half of the third period.
notes: There is also a crabapple variety so named originating in Sweden. In addition, the Sylvia is often confused with the Silva, a dessert apple (Melba x Stenbock) also developed in Sweden.
