synonyms: Rusty Coat Sweet. Also Rusty Coat, but this is a generic name which, at one time or another, has been used to refer to any one of many, many russetted apples. There is a North American apple named Rusty Coat, see Rusty Coat .
summary: Reputed to be one of the finest Gloucestershire cider apples.
identification: Small, oblate. The skin base colour is green yellow, blushed orange on the sun exposed face and covered with dense patches of rough russet. Russet lenticels. The stem is very short and set in a deep, russetted cavity. The calyx is open and set in a deep, round basin.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, firm, crisp, tender and a bit dry. Sweet and nutty flavour.
origins: Described by British pomologist Robert Hogg in the 1884 edition of "The Fruit Manual" as being "A Gloucestershire cider apple, and considered one of the best; ripe during October and November."
harvest: Late in the fourth period.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
