identification: Small to medium in size. Flat round. Skin colour is rich golden yellow over which are orange flushes and stripes. Small patches of russet. The eye is large and open, set in a medium deep and wide basin. The Stem is long and medium thickness, set in a deep and funnel shaped cavity.
characteristics: The cream coloured flesh is fine?grained, crisp, firm, somewhat juicy with a distinct fragrance and sharpness. Ver similar in flavour to the CoxÕs Orange Pippin.
uses: Intended as a fresh eating apple. Very similar to CoxÕs Orange Pippin.
origins: Grown from a seed of Cox s Orange Pippin in 1918 by G.C. Addy in Kent, U.K. and subsequently introduced in cooperation with William Rogers of Dartford, also in Kent. I was named Sunset in 1933 and received the Royal Horticultura Association s Award of Merit in 1960 followed by a First Cla Certificate in 1982. The pollen parent is not known at this stage.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading spur bearer. It tends to overcrop, so the blossoms need to be thinned in order to achieve fruit of reasonable size. Grows in dry and cool climates.
