Summer Banana

no image available
type: Culinary, Dessert, Pie, Sauce
identification: Medium size, round-conic. The skin base colour is rich yellow, sometimes blushed red on the sun-exposed face. Abundant light-coloured lenticels. The stem set in a deep and wide, funnel-shaped cavity, is moderately stout and extends well above the shoulder of the apple.
characteristics: The flesh is white, fine-grained and crisp. Juicy and sweet. When fully ripened, this apple has a distinct flavour of bananas. However, the intensity of flavour and aroma depends largely on where it was grown. In cooler climates it tends to be faint and even absent, whereas the apples growing in warm climates can be highly and unmistakably aromatic.
uses: Most commonly used as a fresh eating apple, but also makes interesting pies and jellies when the apple has a solid banana aroma
origins: A seedling tree found growing in Marion County, South Carolina (U.S.A.) in the mid-1800s and widely grown in much of the American southeast during the course of almost a century. In 1900, it was trademarked by the J. Van Lindley Nursery of Greensboro, North Carolina and promoted throughout much of the United States. Unfortunately, a new generation of apple cultivars overtook the sales of apples and the Summer Banana declined. It is still available from American nurseries, but is no longer considered a profitable commercial apple.
cold storage: Does not store well.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the third period.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
harvest period: 3
