identification: Very large, round and lightly ribbed. The bright green skin is washed red and marked with broken darker red stripes. The lenticels are russeted and abundant. The eye is medium size and open, set in a medium deep and narrow basin. The stem is short to very short and set in a shallow cavity which often has a fleshy swelling and russet rays radiating out onto the shoulder.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, firm and coarse grained. Juicy, sweet and quite tart, but mellowing in storage.
uses: A cooking apple that makes a creamy, sweet?tart sauce.
origins: Norfolk UK 1794 A chance seedling found in 1794 by George Lindsey, nurseryman, in the garden of William Crowe of Lakenham Norwich NFC: Found by George Lindley in the garden of William Crowe, Lakenham, Norwich, England in 1794. Distributed in 1847.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, spreading tree. Bears fruit on spurs. Ready for harvest: During the first half of the fourth period, over the span of several weeks. Problems:
