summary: Dating back to the Roman Empire, this unique apple with its five-starred profile was thought to have been lost but rediscovered in 1981 and once again available.
identification: Small to medium size. Flattened with a distinct crown and pronounced five-cornered angular sides. Yellow base colour blushed red on the sun exposed face.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, fine-grained, firm. Juicy, sweet and slightly tart, lightly aromatic.
uses: An eating apple but also used for Christmas decoration due to its unique shape and bright colours.
origins: First mentioned by by German botanist Jean Bauhin in the late 1500s as the "pomum pentagonum" or five-starred apple, but thought to have originated with the Roman Empire and grown primarily in Germany and Switzerland.
