identification: Medium size, somewhat irregular in shape but tending to be taller than it is wide. Smooth skin is entirely covered with bright red blush. Sparsely speckled with white dots, ocassionally brown freckles.
characteristics: Flesh is cream coloured, firm, crisp and juicy with a pleasant acid balance. Once exposed to air, it oxidizes very slowly.
uses: Usually eaten fresh but also great in fruit salads. The tanginess also makes this a good apple for sauce.
origins: This all?red sport of the Braeburn apple was discovered in the Hawke s Bay area of New Zealand during the early 1980s and released later in the same decade. It was propogated by grafting and is marketed and controlled by the New Zealand s ENZA marketing group.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, spreading spur bearer. Crops heavily with a biennial tendency. Ready for picking at the e of the midddle period.
ploidism: Self fertile but produces best in the presence of a appropriate pollinizer. Do not use Braeburn or any sports of the Braeburn for this purpose. Group E. Day18.
