identification: Medium to large size. The skin base colour is yellow which is washed with blushes of light and darker red. Round, tan-coloured, russet lenticels cover the surface and are most visible against a background of red. The stem cavity is moderately deep and somewhat wide, marked with a patch of brownish russet that extends up to and often over the crown of the cavity. The calyx is moderately large with upright petals which are usually partly open, set in a somewhat shallow and wide basin,
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, crisp and juicy. Sweet-tart and intensely aromatic, very flavourful. Tend to turn brown on exposure to air.
uses: Fresh eating, baking and cider.
origins: Though sometimes listed as having been grown in the state of Georgia in southeastern U.S.A., it likely originated in the Smoky Mountain region near Gatlinburg, Tennessee (U.S.A.) during the first half of the 1800s. It was thought lost until the the mid-1980s when the late Henry Morton of Gatlinburg started to explore the many long-abandoned orchards in the area.
