type: Eating, Pie, Sauce
identification: Medium size, round, slightly conical. Skin base colour is yellow overlaid with red blush and broken stripes on the sun exposed face.
characteristics: Flesh is pale yellow, crisp, juicy. Firm texture. Good sweet tart balance and the flavour has hints of spice and herbs, florals. Skin tends to be thin.
uses: A bit on the tart side for eating fresh, but good forapple sauce, apple pies, puree and butter. The slices hold their shape when baked.
origins: Discovered as a chance seedling in the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Chico, California (U.S.A.) during the late 1800s and thought to have originated from an apple core discarded by a miner during the early part of the California gold rush. It was offered in nurseries around Chico for some time during the 1920s, but it failed to catch on and was thought to have become extinct. However, it was rediscovered growing in the commercial orchards operated by the Gowan family of Mendocino County, California, in the early 1980s. Supply is still limited and largely offered by Gowan's Oak Tree Fruit Stand near Philo, California.
cultivation: It will start to produce in its third year. Tends to crop heavy on a biennial basis. Tolerates Hardiness Zones 6 through 9. The fruit tends to be bland tasting when grown in less-than-suitable locations.

harvest: In the middle of the third period over the span of several weeks.
