summary: Grown from a seedling found in the northeastern region of the United States, this has long been a prized eating apple. Sometimes difficult to find, but it's fortunately still grown in smaller orchards.
identification: Medium to large, round fruit. Yellow base colour, blushed red and marked with a pattern of crimson stripeS. The stem is slender and set in lightly russeted cavity. The calyx closed, sometimes partly open and set in a shallow basin.
characteristics: Flesh white, fine-grained, tender, juicy, Good sweet-tart balance, slightly aromatic.
origins: According to Charles Downing in the 1869 revision of his brother's "The Fruits and Fruit Trees of America," this apple originated as a chance seedling on the farm of Luther Scott near Hinsdale, in Cattaragus County, New York (U.S.A.).
