type: Dessert
synonyms: Scarlet Pole
summary: A Mack-style, fresh-eating apple with columnar growth habit, bred at Canada's Summerland Research Station in the late 1900s.
identification: Large to very large fruit, round to round flattened. Weakly ribbed on the faces. On the surface, the skin is thick and smooth, developing a waxy feel as it matures. Base colour is greenish yellow, over which is a pale reddish blush and darker red striping. Some russet can develop at the calyx basin. The calyx is small and partly open, set in a shallow and somewhat wide basin. The stem is short and set in a medium to deep and wide cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white. Moderately juicy and moderately sweet. McIntosh flavours. Tends to brown slowly when exposed to air.
origins: Developed by David Lane in 1986 at the Summerland Research Station in Summerland, British Columbia (Canada) by crossing Discovery with 8C-17-36 (a cross of Wijcik Spur McIntosh and Stark Delicious ). Evaluated from 1987 to 1995 and released in 1997. It shares the same genetics as Golden Sentinel .
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright, compact, columnar growth habit. Some sideway branches do bear fruit off the main stem. Spur bearer. Precocious. Produces annual crops. Does well as a patio planter or in a small garden location. Because of its compact growth it is increasingly grown in commercial orchards to pollinate apples.
