identification: Medium to large, round and flattened at the ends, often with angular faces. The skin base colour is green washed with faint reddish brown on the sun-exposed face. Heavily russetted. The calyx is medium to large and partly open, set in a wide and medium deep basin. The stem is long, sometimes medium and slender, set in a deep and wide cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is pale green, coarse-grained, tender and juicy. Slightly tart, the flavour is brisk and very sweet and aromatic.
uses: A highly regarded heritage dessert apple. Excellent pie apple and also makes a delicious apple sauce. Wonderful for flavourful, refreshing juice. Its aroma and high sugar content make it especially favoured for blending in cider.
origins: It emerged as a chance seedling in the area of the Massachusetts Bay Colony near what is now Boston, Massachussets (U.S.A.), during the early 1600s, likely from a discarded core from an apple brought to North America with the arrival of the pilgrims. Named after the town of Roxbury where it was cultivated and propagated by Joseph Warren during the early 1700s.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading tree that bears fruit on both spurs and shoots. It has a tendency to produce the best harvests every other year. Requires pruning every year.
cold storage: Keeps for up to five months and is excellent for eating even when the surface is slightly shriveled.
vulnerabilities: Resistant to scab, mildew and blight, but prone to canker.
harvest: Late in the fourth period and through the first half of the fifth. Preharvest drop can be a problem.
notes: Sometimes confused with the Golden Russet, but it has a more flattened shape than the Golden.
