synonyms: French Pippin, Lawson Pearmain, Irish Russet (there is another variety which is known primarily by this name; as well, this is used as a synonym for the Sam Young), Ross's Nonpareil, Ross' Nonpareil.
identification: Medium size, round tending to round conic tending to lopsided. The skin is greenish with a reddish blush on the sun exposed face and marked with red striping. Extensively or completely covered with a golden brown russet. The eye is medium size and open, set in a wide and somewhat shallow basin. The stem is long and slender, set in a deep and narrow cavity which is russeted with rays extending over the shoulder. There is a rough feel to the skin.
characteristics: The flesh is greenish white, firm, somewhat dry. Sweet and aromatic, intense flavours with pronounced fennel flavours.
uses: A highly regarded eating apple, though it can be rather flavourless when grown in too warm a climate.
origins: First mentioned in the 1802 County of Meathby Robert Thompson as being widely grown in County Meath (Ireland) as well as surrounding counties. T Reverend John Dubourdieu also mentions it in his 1812 Statistical Survey of the County of Antrim commonly grown in his region. Though widely attributed as having originated in Ireland it is believed to be of French origins and its known name today relates to the Castle Ross located in the heart of County Meath.
