identification: Medium size, pronounced round-flattened shape, sometimes somewhat conic, with ribbed faces resembling a pentagon, often with one side smaller than the other. The skin is smooth, thick and glossy, with a greasy feel. The base colour is pale greenish yellow maturing to bright yellow over which is a red blush on the sun-exposed face. Stippled liberally with small yellowish lenticels across the blushed areas. The calyx is small and closed, sometimes partly open, set in a moderately deep and narrow basin surrounded by a lightly knobbed crown. The stem is thin and moderately long, extending just proud of the cavity which is moderately deep and moderately narrow and usually russetted with rays extending onto the shoulder.
characteristics: The flesh is white sometimes tending to pale yellowish, fine-grained, tender. Very juicy and sweet-tart with winy flavours and a mild rose aroma. Browns quickly after exposure to air.

origins: Assumed to have originated as a chance seedling (possibly from Böhmer) in the Caldaro, Venezia Tridentina region or the provincia di Bolzano of northern Italy before 1810 and was well established as a market apple by 1929, accounting for one third of the apples grown in the region for almost 30 years. It was subsequently crowded out of commercial orchards by newer cultivars. Described in 1889 under the synonym Mantuaner by the eminent German pomologist Dr. Theodor Engelbrecht in his book "Deutschlands Apfelsorten."
