identification: Moderately large, somewhat pear-shaped. When ripe, the skin is yellowish green and rather thick, often developing bright red striping on the sun exposed face. the lenticels are dark brown, small and abundant. The calyx is deep and narrow, closed and surrounded by a knobbed shoulder. A moderately thick, moderately long stem, set in a deep cavity, sometimes with a hint of russet.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, fine grained and juicy. Sweet with a wine flavour.
origins: Listed the Illustriertes Handbuch der Obstkunde, 1859-1875 by Lucas and Oberdieck, as probably originating in Russia and widely grown in the surroundings of Riga in Latvia.
ploidism: Self sterile.
