Reinette Russet

summary: Propagated from a bud mutation of the Reine des Reinettes the Fruit and Ornamental Plant Breeding Unit of the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique in Angers (France). It was subsequently tested starting in 1970 at the Agriculture and AgriFood Canada research station in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec (Canada).
identification: Medium small to medium large and varying between round conical and flat round. The skin is brownish yellow with some red striping on the sun-exposed face and completely covered with a fine to medium russetting. Look for large, protruding, russetted lenticels. The stem is medium length and average diameter, set in a slightly deep, wide basin.
characteristics: The flesh is greenish white, firm and juicy. Sweet and flavourful with nutty aromas. It browns quickly once exposed to oxygen. It produces a sweet, honey-gold juice with complex baked apple, clove and cinnamon aromas with some tannins and considerable sweetness.
uses: Intended as a hardier, more scab resistant replacement for the Golden Russet in apple cider production, it is also a sweet and aromatic eating apple.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading tree. It bears fruit on shoots which are two to four years old.
cold storage: Beware of water core developing in storage.
vulnerabilities: Partially resistant to scab, resistant to mildew and blight.

ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
