summary: Firm and fine-textured with a raspberry flavour, this is a traditional Yuletide apple in western Europe.
identification: Medium size, round to round flattened. The base colour is greenish yellow which is almost entirely washed deep red, the background showing through only on shaded surfaces. Moderately large, star shaped, light coloured dots are abundantly scattered across the surface. The calyx is wide and open, set in a shallow basin. The stem is stout and moderately long, extending out, marginally beyond the shoulder.
characteristics: The flesh is pale yellowish, fine-grained and moderately firm. Very juicy, sweet-tart and slightly spicy. Mild raspberry flavour.
origins: Thought to have originated as a chance seedling in the Maastricht area (Netherlands). It may have been first described in 1830 when it was widely grown in Europe. However, it declined rapidly during the mid-1950s.
cultivation: Vigorous, upright becoming spreading. Partial tip bearer. Sensitive to windy locations. Prone to bearing best every other year. Grows well in somewhat sandy soil. Young trees require four to six years before fruiting.
cold storage: Keeps up to two months stored in a dark and cool place.
vulnerabilities: Moderately resistant to both scab and mildew.
harvest: Starting in the last half of the third period over a span of two to three weeks. Premature fruit fall can be a problem.
